Do you spend your days looking at your website data and see that you’re struggling to convert visitors to clients? Or maybe you feel like your website isn’t getting the attention it deserves? Like, why is no one coming to see me? Cue the crickets…..
If you’re shaking your head or furrowing your brow, it might be time to dig deeper into why your site isn’t converting your visitors into loyal clients. Whether it’s a confusing layout or a lack of clear messaging, there are several factors that might be hindering your website’s performance.
But don’t worry, I met up with my friend Sandrine Wilson from Sandrine Design Co. to help walk us through how to uncover three key things you can do today to get it converting your dream clients fast.
1. Make Sure Your Homepage Gets Straight To The Point
Your homepage is your virtual storefront, and it needs to be crystal clear. But, if it doesn’t quickly communicate to your visitors what you offer, who you help, or how you can assist them, they’re not going to stick around.
When it comes to your homepage, simple is better than complex. You don’t want your visitors on your site getting caught up in confusion that they feel paralyzed about what you want them to do next. It should be a journey and a predictable one that you create for them to bring them into your site to learn more and ultimately create a conversion whether that’s buy now or read more. Conversion isn’t always about the dolla dolla bills, but rather bringing someone closer to getting out their credit card.
So, pull up your website and let’s take a look to see if your site follows this roadmap:
1. Navigation: Keep it simple. Your header navigation bar should be easy to read and straightforward. Think of it as a friendly guide that helps your visitors find exactly what they’re looking for without getting lost.
2. Headline: Your headline is the first thing visitors see. It should shout out who you are, what you do, and who you help. Make it punchy and to the point.
3. Mini About Section: Think of this as a quick, friendly introduction. This isn’t just about listing your credentials; it’s about making a connection. Let your visitors know you understand where they are and that you’re here to help.
4. Services Overview: Highlight the primary benefits you offer, followed by a brief rundown of your services. This section should answer the “What’s in it for me?” question that’s always on your visitors’ minds.
5. Testimonial/Social Proof: Social proof is your secret weapon. Share reviews or testimonials that showcase the awesome outcomes clients have had working with you. It’s like a trust badge for your site.
6. Extra Content Overview: Not everyone will dive straight into your services. Some might need a bit more warming up. This is where blogging, email marketing, and digital products come into play. These extras help build your community and boost your visibility.
7. Final CTA: At the end of your homepage, give a friendly nudge. Summarize what visitors have learned and guide them on what to do next, whether it’s booking a call or signing up for your newsletter.
8. Footer: The footer wraps up your site neatly. Include links to all your pages, making it easy for visitors to navigate.
2. Make Sure Your Messaging Is Clear And Offers A CTA
It’s a tough pill to swallow, but it’s possible you’re losing potential customers without even realizing it. A very common pitfall is unclear messaging. Unclear messaging on a website can significantly undermine conversions and alienate potential customers.
When visitors land on a site, they seek immediate clarity on the value proposition and how it addresses their needs. Ambiguous or convoluted content can lead to confusion and frustration, prompting visitors to abandon the site.
Additionally, unclear messaging can erode trust and credibility. It’s crucial for your website to convey a clear and concise message so your visitors quickly understand the benefits and actions you want them to take. If not, they’ll bail most likely not to return again.
So, how can you create a conversion-filled online experience?
Sandrine suggests you go through your website as if you were your ideal customer. Look for holes in that experience and make a plan to fill them. If you’d prefer, and actually we’d recommend, have a friend review it for you. Most often we are too close to our genius, so the holes may be harder to spot. But they won’t be for someone who isn’t as familiar with our offer or what you’re trying to sell.
Encourage him or her to check specifically for clear calls to action. Every page should have a clear CTA. Each page should guide your visitors on an intentional journey through your website and naturally lead to the next, making the experience seamless. If not, that could be dragging your conversion rates down.
SO IMPORTANT. We live in a world of instant gratification. If your CTA button doesn’t work, your offerings aren’t clear, your menu is confusing, or your site isn’t mobile-optimized, you’re losing potential sales. Make usability a top priority.
When I have a client who wants a new website, one of my first questions is who is writing your copy? If they don’t have a clear answer or say they’re doing it, we take a deep dive into their messaging. This is my first step because while I can help them get the design and aesthetics in place, the copy is just as important and sometimes is downplayed in its importance or even overlooked as a simple task.
3. Align Your Website Design To Your Business Goals
Design is crucial. Websites often fail to convert because they lack clear goals and don’t effectively communicate their value. If visitors don’t know what you want them to do or why they should care, they won’t stick around.
A well-designed website that flows logically can significantly influence user behavior. Before you start the web design process, get crystal clear on your business objectives. Are you looking to educate your visitors, prompt consultation calls, encourage digital product purchases, or get them to explore your resources?
Once you have your goals in place, shape your website layout accordingly. Ask yourself, what actions do I want my visitors to take?
Your competitors are most likely already asking themselves these same questions. One of the best ways to stay ahead of the competition is by keeping your visuals fresh and updated. As much as we try not to, we do judge a book by its cover and your website is no exception.
If someone new to your brand landed on your website today, what would she think? What’s the first thing she would see? Do you have clear messaging to tell her what you do? Do you have photos that tell a story?
If you find yourself cowering a bit here, don’t worry. Everyone has at one time or another not been super proud of their online presence. And that’s ok. This is your time to change that. You can start with having professional brand photos taken at least once a year to use throughout your website, social media and more. You can also utilize free stock photo sites like Pexels and Unsplash.
As your business evolves, so should your visuals. This keeps your website looking polished and current so when your ideal client lands on your website, you’re ready.
2 Common Mistakes And How To Avoid Them
It’s easy to fall into one of these two traps, but we’re here to help you before it’s too late:
1. Many businesses over complicate their websites with too much information and too many options. Keep it simple, focus on your core offerings, and guide your visitors clearly on what to do next.
2. If you’re not asking for a review, you’re missing out on a big opportunity. Ask your raving fans to rave about you. Reviews provide essential social proof. Send a testimonial questionnaire to clients after completing work with them asking for their feedback and review. You can even ask for video testimonials or permission to use their brand photos to create a relatable and trustworthy narrative for potential clients.
Different Industries Face Different Challenges
As we close, we want to express that we know different industries face unique challenges. That is not overlooked here, but the solution always lies in understanding your audience deeply and tailoring your strategy to meet their specific needs. If you can fully lean into that, your conversion rates will improve. Trust is ultimately the foundation of conversion. If you can demonstrate that to your ideal clients, you’ve won the internet.
