Raise your hand if you’d like to know the secret formula to getting BIG results in your business? Yeah, I see those imaginary hands in the air. Whether you’re a coach, author, artist, speaker, or course creator, you’ve got a personal brand and with that comes the responsibility to share your knowledge.
But if you’re feeling stuck or uninspired, it can be easy to look around to see what everyone else is doing and ah-hem, borrow their ideas. But when you do that, you get lost in the mix and that’s not ok. If you’re not seeing the results you want, chances are you’re not being entirely true to who you are….you’re just kinda blending in vs. standing out.
If you’re truly committed to getting real bottom-line, life impacting results, here are four personal branding tips to help you differentiate yourself so you can start changing your life and your business today.
1. Stop Comparing Your Chapter 1 to Someone Else’s Chapter 10
If you walk away with only one thing, let this be the one. The comparison game is for real, and it’s my least favorite to play. You know the one – where you scroll through social media and feel a pang of envy as you see someone else’s success. “Why is she so far ahead?” you wonder.
Here’s the deal: everyone’s journey is different. Different steps and seasons happen at different speeds. Trust me when I say wanting and wishing it to go faster won’t make it go faster. And comparing your chapter one to someone else’s chapter 10 is like comparing apples to, well, a watermelon.
Imagine if J.K. Rowling had compared her scribbles on napkins to a bestselling author with 10 novels under her belt. She might have given up before she even started. Your journey is yours alone, and so are your experiences. Embrace where you are now and keep moving forward. Your chapter 10 is coming, and it’s going to be epic.
2. Create Content That Is YOU (and Not a Copy of Someone Else)
Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt tempted to mimic someone else’s content or brand vibe because it’s working for them. We’ve all been there or at least thought about going there. And while copying someone else’s style might get you some short-term attention, it won’t build a loyal audience.
Your audience wants to hear from YOU. They want to know your thoughts, your insights, and your stories. So, instead of trying to fit into someone else’s mold, break it and create your own. Infuse your personality into your content. Use your voice, share your humor, and don’t be afraid to let your true self shine.
The real you will draw people in like a magnet. So, go ahead and be unapologetically you. Your people are out there, and they’re waiting to hear what only you can say.
3. Get Crystal Clear on WHO You Are Designed to Serve
I have said this over and over again, if you’re talking to everyone, you’re talking to no one. Not everyone is meant to be in your ecosystem. Yup, that’s a big ‘ol hit to the ego from some of you.
If you’re trying to talk to everyone, it waters down your message and makes it harder for your ideal clients to find you. You’re just vanilla. And you don’t want to be vanilla [unless you’re ice cream, then you do.] And you certainly don’t want to be basic.
Instead, get laser-focused on who you are designed to serve. Who are your dream clients? What are their struggles, their dreams, their fears? What unique gifts do you bring to the table that can help them? How can you solve their biggest challenges? The more specific you get, the better.
So, grab a notebook and start brainstorming and journaling out answers to those questions. Describe your ideal client in detail. Then, create content that speaks directly to her. When you know who you’re serving, everything else falls into place.
4. Tell The Stories Only You Can Tell
We all have stories. Some are funny, some are heart-wrenching, and some might seem insignificant. But your stories matter. They shape who you are and how you connect with others.
Don’t be afraid to share the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Maybe it’s the story of how you got started, the challenges you’ve overcome, or a lesson you’ve learned along the way. These stories make you relatable and human.
Think about it. Why do you choose to follow certain people on social media? My hunch is that she shared a story that you saw yourself in and you thought, “Hey, I like you. I want to know more from you.” And that was about it. Now you’re invested. The same can go for you too.
Want a simple framework to help you get started? Glad you asked, because here it is:
Take Me Into The Moment > The Shift/Shit/Growth > The Outcome/Lesson
In one column, write as many moments as you can [Google sheet is great for this], big or small it doesn’t matter, then in the column next to it write the shift or the shit you walked through, and the lesson or outcome you got from that experience.
The MOMENT | The SHIFT/GROWTH | The OUTCOME/LESSON |
The day I started working on content system that worked for me | Tried them all – spent a lot of $ – still nothing felt easy and I knew a few steps could be removed. Plus I wanted to look forward to it – FUN again! | I finally am not held hostage to creation overwhelm – I have a way to take a singular piece of content and can use it over multiple mediums |
I promise if you use this framework you will no longer say, “No one will care about this,” Share your story. You never know who needs to hear it and how it might impact her life.
