Hi, I'm Becca

Being a female founder in business undoubtedly comes with its own set of challenges. From navigating the competitive landscape to managing day-to-day operations, the journey of entrepreneurship can be both rewarding and taxing. And as one who has been on this journey for almost a decade, there are things you should never say to yourself. Instead, they are moments to work in building your mental toughness is challenged more than ever.

But, no matter how tough you are, amidst the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to fall prey to negative self-talk, which can significantly impact your mental well-being and hinder your progress.

Self-talk can either lift us up or tear us down. As a female founder who’s been on this journey for a while, you’ve likely encountered moments of self-doubt and negativity. But it’s crucial to recognize what that how we talk to ourselves can significantly impact our resilience and ability to persevere.

As you navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, it’s crucial to cultivate a mindset of positive self-talk. Keeping some phrases in your back pocket can be the best tool when times are tough, and yes, they will get tough. The following phrases are some of the most common negative things we tell ourselves, but with a little reframe and mindfulness, you can keep your head from staying here too long.

Here are seven things to never say to yourself and how you can reframe them if you find yourself going there.

1. “I’m not good enough.”
One of the most damaging beliefs you can hold is the idea that you’re not good enough. As a female founder, it’s common to face imposter syndrome—a feeling of inadequacy despite evidence of success. However, it’s essential to recognize that everyone experiences self-doubt from time to time. Instead of dwelling on perceived shortcomings, focus on why you’re in this. Take it a step further and start noting the things you DO on a daily basis. I bet your badass self will start to see [and soon feel] how amazing you really are. It will definitely remind you of the skills and qualities that have brought you this far in your entrepreneurial journey.

Reframe: “I am constantly growing and learning. My journey is unique, and I am capable of achieving my goals.”

2. “I’ll never succeed.”
The entrepreneurial journey is riddled with uncertainties, and it’s natural to fear failure. Adopting a defeatist attitude will only hinder your progress. I know because I’ve been there several times, but I encourage you to never say this to yourself. Instead of dwelling on the possibility of failure, shift your mindset to one of resilience and determination. Viewing obstacles as opportunities for growth and innovation opens up a whole new perspective rather than insurmountable barriers. Remember, failure is not a reflection of your worth but a stepping stone on the path to success.

Reframe: “I am resilient and resourceful. With perseverance and determination, I will overcome any challenges that come my way.”

3. “I’ll never reach my goals.”
When faced with challenges or setbacks, it’s natural to feel discouraged and doubt your ability to achieve your goals. However, it’s essential to maintain a positive outlook and remind yourself that success is not linear. Break down your goals into smaller, more manageable tasks, and celebrate each milestone along the way. By staying focused on your vision and taking consistent action, you’ll gradually move closer to realizing your dreams.

Reframe: “I’m facing some obstacles in reaching my goals, but I’m committed to overcoming them. I understand that success isn’t always immediate and requires perseverance.”

4. “I should have achieved more by now.”
Oy, this one is sticky. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing your progress to others and feeling like you’re behind. However, everyone’s entrepreneurial journey is unique, and success is not measured by arbitrary timelines. Instead of dwelling on what you haven’t accomplished, focus on the progress you’ve made and the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and trust in the process of growth and development.

Reframe: “I trust in my journey and celebrate my progress. Every step forward, no matter how small, brings me closer to my goals.”

5. “I’m alone in this.”
Entrepreneurship can sometimes feel like a solitary journey. However, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Never say you’re alone, because there are a lot of ways to find a community of people to link arms with if you look for them. Three I am a part of are Like-Minded Collective [which is free to join!] The Entreprenista League [check out their website for enrollment periods] and Powerhouse Women [their HUGE event is happening in August and we are going to be there IRL!] I highly encourage you to seek support from fellow female founders, mentors, or business networks who can offer guidance, encouragement, and perspective. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people elevates your journey and you.

Reframe: “I am part of a supportive community of female entrepreneurs who uplift and empower each other. Together, we can overcome any obstacles and achieve success.”

6. “I don’t deserve success.”
Self-doubt can often manifest as feelings of unworthiness or undeservingness, especially when experiencing success or recognition in your business. However, it’s essential to acknowledge your accomplishments and embrace the success you’ve worked hard to achieve. As women, we are so conditioned to give praise it feels awkward to receive it. Recognize that you deserve every opportunity that comes your way and allow yourself to celebrate your achievements without guilt or self-doubt.

Reframe: Repeat to yourself, “I am worthy of the success I achieve.” Embrace the notion that your efforts and talents contribute to your accomplishments, and acknowledge that you are deserving of the opportunities that come your way.

7. “I can’t handle this.”
There will inevitably be moments when the challenges of entrepreneurship feel overwhelming, and you doubt your ability to cope. But it’s essential to remind yourself of your resilience and inner strength. Never say you can’t, because if you want it bad enough, and I know you do, you will find a way.

Instead of succumbing to self-doubt, tell yourself that you are capable of overcoming any obstacle that comes your way. You’ve already proven that you have what it takes to embark on this journey—now trust in yourself to see it through. If needed, I’d make a list of all the badass things you’ve already overcome so when you’re feeling overwhelmed again, you can remind yourself, you got this!

Reframe: “I’m facing a tough challenge right now.” Acknowledge the challenge, but know that you have the skills and resources within you to overcome it.

By being mindful of the words you speak to yourself and avoiding negative self-talk, you can cultivate a mindset of resilience, confidence, and self-belief. Remember, you are capable, worthy, and deserving of success—so never underestimate the power of positive self-talk on your entrepreneurial journey.

You deserve everything you want. Go claim it girl, it’s already yours. LOVE yourself enough to believe it to be true. And if you’re feeling super inspired, share this blog with a friend who needs to hear these words. The struggle is real, and taking a moment to reframe a limiting thought or even belief can literally change someone’s day. And I know you’re a day-changer kind of person.

So much love to you friend. ❤️
