Hi, I'm Becca

We all carry beliefs that shape our decisions, behaviors, and how we perceive the world. Some beliefs serve us well, guiding us toward growth and success. Others, however, can hold us back, keeping us stuck in patterns that no longer serve us. Often, these limiting beliefs are so ingrained in our subconscious that we don’t even realize they’re there.

But, as we get older and more aware of our beliefs, we have a choice. We can keep believing them, or we can change them. Yes, this means you have the power to break free of them and to choose a more self-serving belief.

Breaking free from old beliefs and rewiring your brain, however, requires intention, curiosity, and the willingness to disrupt familiar patterns.

In this blog, I share how to identify outdated beliefs, understand where they came from, and introduce three powerful ways to disrupt these patterns and create space for new, empowering beliefs.

Understanding the Roots of Beliefs

Beliefs are formed through experiences, teachings, and the narratives we’re exposed to from an early age. They might stem from family, culture, religion, or society. While some beliefs are consciously chosen, many are absorbed without question.

For example, you might believe that “success requires struggle,” because that’s what you saw modeled by your parents. Or, you might have internalized the idea that “you’re not creative” because of a single comment from a teacher years ago.

These beliefs create neural pathways in the brain, which become stronger each time we reinforce them with thoughts or actions. Over time, these pathways form mental “shortcuts,” making the belief feel automatic and unchangeable. But, beliefs are not facts. They’re simply thoughts you’ve accepted as true. And just as they were created, they can be replaced.

Why Disrupting Patterns Matters

Pattern disruption is the process of interrupting habitual thought or behavior patterns to create an opportunity for change. It’s a way to pause, reflect, and choose differently. By introducing pattern disrupters, you can challenge the neural pathways supporting old beliefs and begin creating new ones.

Let’s dive into three effective ways to disrupt patterns and rewire your brain for better beliefs.

1. Ask, “Is This Belief True?”

The first step to breaking an old belief is questioning its validity. Often, we accept beliefs as universal truths without examining their accuracy. By asking, “Is this belief true?” you engage your critical thinking and open the door to alternative perspectives.

How to Use This Question:

  1. Identify the Belief: Write down a belief that feels limiting or unhelpful. For example, “I’m bad at public speaking.”
  2. Challenge Its Validity: Ask yourself, “Is this absolutely true?” Is there concrete evidence supporting this belief, or is it based on assumptions or past experiences?
  3. Look for Exceptions: Recall moments when this belief wasn’t true. Perhaps you gave a toast at a wedding and received compliments, or you shared an idea in a meeting, and it was well-received.

By dismantling the illusion of “truth” surrounding the belief, you weaken its hold on your mind.

Pro Tip: Use journaling as a tool for this exercise. Writing down your thoughts allows you to see them more objectively and uncover hidden layers of the belief.

2. Ask, “Is It Mine or Did I Take Someone Else’s Belief?”

Many of our beliefs are inherited from others. Parents, teachers, friends, and societal norms often pass down their perspectives, which we adopt as our own without questioning. Asking, “Is this belief mine or someone else’s?” helps you discern whether a belief aligns with your values and authentic self.

How to Use This Question:

  1. Trace the Origin: Reflect on where the belief came from. For example, if you believe, “Money is the root of all evil,” consider who first expressed this idea to you. Was it a parent, a religious leader, or the media?
  2. Evaluate Alignment: Ask yourself if the belief aligns with your current values and goals. Does it feel true to who you are, or does it feel imposed?
  3. Decide to Let Go: If the belief isn’t yours, consciously release it. Say out loud or write down, “I release this belief. It’s not mine, and it doesn’t serve me.”

Pro Tip: Visualization can be a powerful tool here. Imagine placing the belief into a box and sending it away, symbolizing your decision to let it go.

3. Create New Neural Pathways with Replacements

Once you’ve disrupted the old belief, it’s essential to replace it with a new, empowering one. This process helps your brain form new neural pathways and reinforces the desired thought pattern.

How to Use This Technique:

  1. Craft a Positive Replacement: Turn the old belief into a new, empowering statement. For example:
    • Old Belief: “I’m not creative.”
    • New Belief: “I am endlessly creative and full of ideas.”
  2. Reinforce the New Belief: Repeat the new belief daily, preferably aloud and with emotion. Visualization can enhance the process. Imagine yourself embodying the belief and experiencing its benefits.
  3. Take Aligned Action: Back up the new belief with actions. For example, if your new belief is “I am a confident speaker,” seek opportunities to speak in front of others, even in small settings or use go live on your social media channels. Each action you take strengthens the new pathway.

Pro Tip: Use affirmations and gratitude practices to reinforce your new beliefs. Pairing the belief with positive emotions accelerates the rewiring process.

The Power of Mindfulness in Rewiring Your Brain

Mindfulness is a valuable companion in the journey of breaking old beliefs. By cultivating present-moment awareness, you can observe your thoughts without judgment and catch limiting beliefs in real-time. Practices like meditation, breathwork, and mindful journaling can help you stay grounded and intentional as you work to rewire your brain.

One thing I have done for years that has really helped is when a limited belief enters my brain I have a physical motion that I do – which is a snap. It doesn’t matter where I am, if I hear this belief in my head, I stop, snap and state out loud my new belief. I also am a work in progress, so as I’m talking you may hear me say something and then stop…and rephrase it a different way. This is me rewriting my brain in real time.

Breaking Old Beliefs Isn’t An Overnight Process

I hate to break it to you, but there’s no fast lane when it comes to breaking up with old beliefs and rewiring your brain. It happens over time and requires consistent effort, patience, and self-compassion. However, the rewards are immense and worth putting in the work. By disrupting patterns and creating space for empowering beliefs, you unlock your full potential and align more deeply with your true self.

Remember, beliefs are not set in stone. They’re flexible and within your power to change. So, take the first step today. Choose one limiting belief, question its validity, and begin the journey of transformation. My belief is you’re capable of creating a life shaped by beliefs that uplift and empower you and that are fully your own.
