Do you ever wish you had a bigger social media audience? Or maybe you’re struggling to grow your social media accounts. At some point, maybe you’re there now, you had thoughts about how much easier it would all be if you just had a bigger following. But that pesky algorithm is keeping you on your toes.
The truth is, the overwhelming dependency on social media can feel like a major obstacle, deciding when to show your content…or not. It’s literally taking over your visibility and rewarding you with engagement…or not.
And with little to no control over how it will perform from one day to the next, it leaves you and I very vulnerable. That’s why it’s time to stop being a victim of the algorithm and start creating content on platforms you can control.
The Algorithm Trap
Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn have totally changed how we connect with our audiences. But their ever-changing algorithms can leave us feeling frustrated and powerless. You might find yourself putting so much effort into creating content, only to watch your reach plummet with the latest algorithm update. Have you already experienced this?
This constant game of trying to outsmart the algorithm can lead to burnout, inconsistency, and a serious creativity block. Instead of creating content that you want to share to your audience, you’re creating to beat an algorithm that may or may not reward you for playing the game. And I for one, am so over playing.
Why Relying on Algorithms is Risky
- Unpredictability: Algorithms are updated constantly, often without warning. What worked yesterday might not work today.
- Lack of Control: Your content’s visibility depends on an algorithm that prioritizes what it thinks is engaging.
- Stress and Burnout: Chasing trends and trying to game the system can be exhausting, leading to burnout and a loss of authentic connection with your audience.
- Platform Dependency: Building your brand solely on social media makes you vulnerable to platform changes, including shutdowns, policy shifts, or account bans.
Stop Being Held Hostage to an Algorithm
To create a lasting impact with your content, it goes well beyond social media. It’s important to adopt a more diversified content strategy that reduces your dependency on algorithms. Here’s how you do it:
1. Build Your Own Platform
Website and Blog: Your website is your digital home – a space you control entirely, free from algorithms deciding who sees your content and who doesn’t. This is a great platform to share a weekly blog full of valuable content that showcases your expertise, shares your story, and connects with your audience on a deeper level.
Email Marketing: Also, unlike social media, where algorithms determine who sees your content, email marketing allows you to reach your audience directly. Prioritize this into your weekly cadence to build and nurture your email list, or see this as you sign to get started, by offering valuable freebies, podcast or blog shares. Consistently send out newsletters with exclusive content, updates, and offers.

2. Create Evergreen Content
Quality Over Quantity: Focus on creating high-quality, evergreen content that remains relevant over time. This includes blog posts, podcasts, videos, and downloadable resources. Evergreen content continues to attract and engage new audiences long after you hit publish.
I recommend Pinterest as part of your evergreen strategy. I am still a dabbler into Pinterest, but from even the small things I’ve done including being consistent, creating titles that grab attention and linking to blogs and freebies to my site, my web traffic has tripled in 14 days. I’ve also seen my email list begin to grow as well. Plus, the content on Pinterest lives for months, not days or even a few hours like it does on social media.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Invest time in learning and implementing SEO strategies to ensure your content ranks well on search engines. This way, potential clients can discover your work through organic searches rather than relying on social media algorithms. This is quite technical but also a few small tweaks helped get my content seen by so many more people. And because of that, I am making SEO a big part of my strategy and marketing plan for 2025.
3. Leverage Multiple Channels
Podcasting: Can I just say I love podcasting! It’s the thing I miss the most when I think about my content plan and what I love to do. So if you are even thinking about starting a podcast I recommend exploring it. A podcast is so good to share your insights, interview industry experts, and provide value to your audience. Podcasting also allows you to connect on a more personal level and reach a different segment of your target market. And, I do plan to bring this back in 2025. Stay tuned.

Guest Posting and Collaborations: If a podcast of your own sounds scary, you can also pitch yourself to be a guest post on other people’s podcasts or even guest blog to be featured on other people’s sites. Do your homework and find reputable websites in your niche. You can also collaborate with other influencers or teach inside other communities. Getting seen in this way can help you reach new audiences and build credibility.
Video Content: Platforms like YouTube offer a different kind of algorithm, one that often rewards consistency and engagement over time. If you want, video record your podcast and share it on YouTube as another way to consume the same content. This is a way to create informative and engaging video content that your audience can return to repeatedly.
4. Cultivate a Community
Membership Sites: If you’re being called to create and lead a community of beautiful humans, a membership is a great way to do that. Create a membership site where your audience can access exclusive content, resources, and a supportive community. Membership sites foster deeper connections and provide a recurring revenue stream. Stay tuned for a new membership community coming later this year.
Online Courses: There is a lot of talk online and beyond about creating something one time sharing it to many. This model works very well as most of us want to move into a space of financial and time freedom. Creating and selling online courses allow this to be our reality. Take the knowledge only you have and develop online courses that offer in-depth knowledge and practical skills. Courses can also be updated over time so you’re not always re-inventing the wheel. Simply polishing it which lightens the workload once the course has been created. My first course will also be coming out in 2025!
Engage Authentically: Here’s where I need to check your ego. And I say this with so much love and grace with a I’ve been there tone . Whether on social media, in your emails, or within your membership site, prioritize authentic engagement. Respond to comments, ask for feedback, and make your audience feel valued. This is such a missed opportunity. Who are we to know how our gifts can serve the world, if we don’t ask? This is something I’m working on in this current season.
There is so much more you can do to share your mission and vision with the world. Don’t get too hung up on social media being the only way you can share your knowledge. It’s clearly not.
Breaking free from the stronghold of social media algorithms is possible.
You can empower yourself and your brand. By implementing another way to connect with your audience, you can create a more sustainable and impactful presence online. Social media is a part of a marketing strategy, it’s not the strategy. If all of your sales are closed on a social media platform, I strongly encourage you to pick any of the ideas in this blog to create one space where you have more control. Because if you’re like me, you like control.
Remember, your brand isn’t defined by an algorithm; it’s defined by your passion, expertise, and the genuine connections you build with your audience. So, stop being held hostage to an algorithm.
